A Qualitative Study of Teachers' Motivation to Use Educational Technology in Classroom Instruction
Kimberly Ann Jennings
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
The problem addressed in this study is that teachers are entering the classroom without the skills to integrate technology at the highest levels of the TIM scale. The perceptions of the participants can aid school officials, administrations, and the teachers themselves by providing what is motivating them to implement educational technology into their instruction. Given the ever-changing educational landscape shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic, this research provided necessary data on why some teachers are implementing educational technology at the higher levels of the TIM and others are not. The lack of research on the motivational and influential factors of educational technology implementation by teachers is present in current literature. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate teachers' perceptions of the motivational and influential factors to implement effective educational technology into their instruction at the higher levels of the TIM scale. This case study was based on qualitative data which provided an understanding of the research through a questionnaire. The findings revealed that in order for teachers to implement educational technology at the higher levels of the TIM scale, their three basic psychological needs need to be met. The implications were that when a teacher feels free to choose which technology to implement, has the knowledge and ability to implement technology, and understands how technology relates to their content, the type of educational technology implemented will be at the higher levels of the TIM. It is recommended that future researchers expand the population through qualitative and quantitative methods to gain a deeper understanding of the motivational and influential factors behind educational technology implementation at the higher levels of the TIM.
