Community College Shared Governance: Themes of Communication and Collaboration in Effective Models
Michael McCloskey
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Community college faculty are essential to the success of student learning. As such, active participation through faculty shared governance is key to student and institutional success. This study explored the role communication and collaboration have in community college faculty shared governance. Using a mixed methods study design, with a focus on semi-structured interviews, the research explored community college faculty and administrators who are involved in shared governance. Participants for this study were faculty and administrators at institutions that participated in the "Great Colleges to Work For" recognition program through the Chronicle of Higher Education in 2020 and/or 2021. The researcher identified institutions placed on the program's honor roll and recognized for work in shared governance and solicited institutional leaders for participation in the study. Using descriptive analysis of participants' responses, the researcher coded survey and interview answers and mapped them to research questions that focused on the role that communication and collaboration have in effective models of shared governance. The results of the study indicate that communication and collaboration are essential to effective community college faculty shared governance models. Effective shared governance models are structured to gather different perspectives, create a space for shared dialogue involving student support, and focus on trust and transparency.
