Parent Involvement as It Relates to Student Achievement

The purpose of the current action based quantitative research study was to investigate a relationship between student's achievement on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) in reading and mathematics and parent participation as school sponsored family reading and math curriculum night workshops. While attending these curriculum nights, parents were taught the math and reading strategies used by their children during the STAAR testing. The research design is an ex-post facto design. The current study took place in a public elementary school in North Texas. During the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years, the large public elementary school served students from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Six hundred fifty-three students are classified as "at-risk." The results of the current study show significant finds for the 2014 fourth grade reading curriculum night and the 2014 fifth grade math curriculum night while 2015 data revealed significant findings for the fourth grade math night.
