Self-Determination and Job Satisfaction of Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The purpose of this quantitative correlational-predictive study was to examine if and to what extent there is a significant statistical predictive relationship between Self-Determination constructs of Autonomy, Relatedness, and Competency with Job Satisfaction among teachers of the Deaf and hard of hearing in K-12 classrooms in the United States. The theoretical framework used for this study was the Self-Determination Theory, which utilizes the three constructs, autonomy, competency, and relatedness. A quantitative correlational approach was accomplished utilizing two instruments, Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction Scale and Job Satisfaction Survey. Research questions were developed to find if there was a statistical significance between job satisfaction and each of the three constructs of self-determination creating three research questions. The survey utilized the volunteer recruitment approach through social media sites, Facebook and LinkedIn. Specific Facebook groups who accepted only teachers of the Deaf and hard of hearing gave approval to post the survey. Utilizing Qualtrics XM systems and SPSS results for each research question revealed statistical significance between all three self-determination constructs and job satisfaction. Linear regressions were conducted for each research question, competency and job satisfaction presenting statistical significance F(1,72) = 35.06, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.319, autonomy and job satisfaction presenting statistical significance F(1,72) = 40.02, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.348 and lastly, relatedness presenting statistical significance F(1,72) = 24.93, p < .001, R2 = 0.249.
