ELLs' Perceptions of Human Elements in Online Classes to Create a Positive Learning Environment
Iyad Jamal Alomari
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
This sequential mixed method aimed to understand students' perspectives of their instructor's capability of humanizing the synchrotron online learning format. Recognizing the impact of humanizing the synchrotron online learning format will aid EL teachers, administrators, and students in considering a holistic plan for improving the synchrotron online learning form. Few studies investigate how EL students experience and perceive integrating the human elements in the synchrotron online learning format. This mixed method study provides insight to EL learners' perspectives (209 survey participants and seven semi-structured interviewees) on their instructor incorporating the human elements in the synchronous online format. Results address EL students' attitudes toward integrating the human factors and how they impacted EL learners' perspectives of engagement and quality of instruction. The students' responses to the questionnaires and the semi-structured interview indicate they had positive perceptions of their instructor's capability to humanize synchronous online learning. Practical implications are offered to improve EL online teaching praxis and create motivational online learning spaces to support EL students and teachers. Suggestions for future studies are also provided. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC. Further reproduction is prohibited without permission.
