The Influence of Principal Leadership Style on Teacher Retention
Christopher M. Mullins
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Leo University
The study aimed to determine the level of influence principal leadership style has on teacher retention compared to teacher self-efficacy alone. A lack of supportive leaders impacts teacher motivation, performance, and retention, contributing to the teacher shortage. The population for this study included PK-12 teachers solicited for participation via social media. The participants were surveyed using an anonymous questionnaire designed specifically for this study. The response rate (N = 75) exceeded the minimum for statistical significance. Research questions one and two examined the associations between principal leadership style and teacher self-efficacy on teacher retention using one-way ANOVA. Research question three examined the influence of teacher self-efficacy and principal leadership style on teacher retention using multiple regression. The results of the one-way ANOVA between principal leadership style and teacher retention were statistically significant F(3, 71) = 3.431, p = 0.022. The results of the one-way ANOVA between teacher self-efficacy and teacher retention were very highly statistically significant F(3, 71) = 9.351, p < 0.001. The results of the multiple regression showed that teacher self-efficacy and principal leadership style statistically significantly predicted teacher retention, F(2, 72) = 12.741, p < 0.001, adjusted R[superscript 2] = 0.241. Principal leadership style was statistically significant to the prediction (p < 0.05), and teacher self-efficacy was very highly statistically significant (p < 0.001). Overall, the results of this study showed a significant association between principal leadership styles and teacher retention and that principal leadership style has a statistically significant influence on teacher retention.
