Why Veteran Teachers Stay in the Profession: An Examination of Veteran Teacher Retention

This study sought to explore the lived experiences that influence veteran teachers' decisions to remain in the teaching profession within a North Texas school district. While the field of education faces numerous challenges, including teacher attrition, this study focuses solely on understanding why some educators choose to persist, rather than on explaining why they leave. The central research question is as follows: "What are the perceptions of veteran teachers who have 20 or more years of experience that contribute to their longevity in the teaching profession at a North Texas school district?" The paramount importance of positive teacher-student interactions emerged as a central theme. Despite the diversity of their backgrounds, subject areas, and teaching levels, the participants consistently underscored the profound influence that their connections with students had exercised on their career choices. These interactions extend beyond fostering students' academic growth and have a strong influence on teachers' job satisfaction and career longevity. Alongside teacher-student relationships, the study highlighted the multifaceted need for support among veteran teachers. The participants spoke of various dimensions of support, including financial recognition, higher trust from administrators, acknowledgments of their contributions, and opportunities for ongoing professional development. This study contributes to existing research by shifting the focus of the inquiry from teachers' reasons for departing from the profession to their reasons for remaining in it. Its insights can inform educational leaders and policymakers in crafting strategies that are aimed at bolstering the retention of veteran teachers. By grasping the motivations of these educators, administrators can work toward creating an environment that nurtures commitment, ultimately benefiting teachers and students alike.
