Perceptions of Student Engagement in Private Higher Education Institutions
Justin M. Houseknecht
ProQuest LLC, D.B.A. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
This quantitative, cross-sectional research investigated the perceptions of engagement from undergraduate Business Department students at one, private, Mid-Atlantic higher education institution. To mitigate the risks of declining enrollment and retention, appropriate levels of positive student engagement are necessary for higher education institutions of all sizes. Data from a survey of 53 undergraduate Business students was collected to evaluate the differences in students' perceptions of engagement between course modalities, students' perceived levels of faculty engagement between course modalities, students' perceptions of engagement between course modalities, and students' perceptions of engagement between course modalities based on student status (freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior). The study revealed that there is a significant difference in students' perceptions of their engagement between in-person and online course modalities, a significant difference in students' perceptions of faculty engagement between in-person and online course modalities, and no significant difference in students' perceptions of their engagement between in-person and online course modalities across the four student status groups (freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior).
