Minority Students' Identity and Belonging in White Evangelical Colleges
Cecily Roach
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Regent University
This dissertation presents a critical analysis of the literature on the experiences of racially minoritized graduate students' experiences. The author focuses on factors that influence spiritual and identity development and belonging for minority students in predominantly White evangelical colleges. This dissertation provides background information on the elements of spiritual and identity development for minority students, key influences on the sense of belonging, the dynamic of evangelical higher education institutions, and the cultural influence of minorities. The goal of this critical analysis is to provide a review of the literature exploring factors that contribute to isolation and inadequate spiritual and identity development for minority graduate students attending predominantly White evangelical colleges. An examination of the literature revealed that minoritized students endure specific cultural stressors that erode their sense of belonging and reduce self-authorship.
