Improving Retention in the Customer Service Department through Increased Learning and Professional Development and Job Satisfaction
Lisa Marie Shumaker
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Marymount University
This dissertation investigated the interplay between learning and professional development, job satisfaction, and employee retention within the Customer Service and Administration Departments of a pest control company. Guided by three research questions, the study explored the predictive relationship between learning and professional development offerings and job satisfaction as well as their collective impact on employee retention. The research hypothesized that if additional learning and professional development opportunities were added for the employees of the Customer Service Department, that job satisfaction would increase, and that employee retention would increase. Utilizing a non-experimental predictive quantitative research design, data was gathered through a survey administered to population of 520 employees with 331 participants, coupled with historical retention data analysis. The findings reveal a positive correlation between learning and professional development, job satisfaction and retention, underscoring the significance for investing in employee development programs. Practical implications for organizational leaders and HR professionals are discussed alongside recommendations for future research and practice. This research contributes to the broader understanding of talent management strategies and underscores the importance of continuous learning initiatives in fostering employee satisfaction and retention within organizational contexts.
