Emotional Intelligence and Leader Authenticity: A Correlational Predictive Study
Linda Melton Huntley
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The authenticity of a leader impacts the organizational environment and contributes to the success and stability of the individual, the team, and the organization. Although emotional intelligence has been used as a predictor of authentic leadership, the assessment of the leader has been largely self-reported. The purpose of this quantitative predictive correlational study was to examine if and to what extent a statistically predictive relationship exists between the predictors of follower perceptions of leader self-emotional appraisal, others' emotional appraisal, use of emotion, regulation of emotion, and the criterion variable of authentic leadership from a subordinate's point of view in organizations in the western United States. A convenience sample of 117 individuals, reporting directly to a leader, responded to online surveys to measure emotional intelligence as a predictor of authentic leadership. While utilizing the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS) and the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ) and using multiple linear regression, the combined score for EI was found to be statistically significant, p < 0.05, and accounted for 82% of the variation combined in ALQ with an adjust R[superscript 2] = 67.2%. The null hypotheses are rejected for ROE and OEA with standard coefficients values of [beta] = 3.69 (p < 0.001), and [beta] = 0.241 (p = 0.008) respectively, indicated a strong positive statistically significant relationship with authentic leadership. Results for SEA, [beta] = 0.186 (p = 0.055), and UOE, [beta] = 0.131 (p = 0.060), failed to reject the null hypotheses. The results of this study affirmed a foundation for further research on the predictive relationship of emotional intelligence and authentic leadership.
