Elizabeth Mary DiDomenico
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Fairleigh Dickinson University
This study utilizes archival data from a district-based initiative aimed at improving the provision of school-based mental health services. It dives deep into the stories of adolescents who were classified and receiving special education supports, which included school-based counseling. These students endured challenging family contexts. A qualitative approach was utilized and the transcripts of six students were reviewed. Thematic analysis revealed six themes which portray significant hardships faced within the home environment, sometimes to the extent of system involvement, juxtaposed with student's ability to overcome based strong positive bonds. These bonds were facilitated and supported by school-based counseling, internal resources, and viewing school as a safe haven. Implications for supporting this population of students in school are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
