Pre-Service Teacher Preparation to Teach in a Virtual Environment: a Quantitative Study of the Perceptions of Early Career Educators
Candace A. Claar
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Shippensburg University
Historically, teacher preparation programs do not adequately prepare teacher candidates to effectively integrate technology into teaching and learning. In addition, an underlying concern is if teachers are ready for online learning and teaching, and sparse research has focused on the preparations of teachers in integrating technology and online teaching preparations. The purpose of this quantitative study is to determine early career teachers' perceptions of their preparedness for virtual teaching. The researcher sought to determine how teacher preparation programs prepare early career teachers to facilitate virtual learning and their perceptions of the technology competencies needed to provide quality virtual instruction. A survey research design was conducted with 102 early career teachers who graduated in spring of 2020 or spring of 2019 from various content areas and grade levels. Findings from the survey revealed that less than 50% of participants were satisfied with their training to integrate technology and teach online. Over 85% of participants indicated that they would have benefitted from additional training on how to integrate technology into instruction and teach online. The findings of the data revealed the most frequently reported online instructional challenges and the types of professional development needed to meet these challenges. This study provides information about the range of needed technology competencies, professional learning experiences, and the challenges of teaching online by two semesters of early career educators. The research in this study has added to the educational field on early career educators' perceptions of the need for online teaching and technology standards within teacher preparation programs.
