Effects of Job Performance and Job Satisfaction on Faculty Turnover Intention in Higher Education

Leaders in higher education direct faculty to accomplish goals to meet the needs of the college or university. The purpose of the study was to examine the impact or effects (if any) of job performance and job satisfaction on turnover intention of faculty in higher education. One hundred and twenty-two faculty members consisting of professors, assistant professors, and associate from colleges and universities throughout the United States were surveyed to gather their perceptions pertaining to their performance, satisfaction, and turnover intention. Quantitative methods involving multivariate analysis were used to examine the independent, dependent, and covariate variables. This research examined whether job performance and job satisfaction had an effect on turnover intention of faculty. Like most studies on turnover, this research is quantitative and correlational. Quantitative methods involving multiple regression were applied to determine whether there were correlations among the independent variables (job performance and job satisfaction), dependent variables (turnover intention), and covariates (faculty status, age, and gender). Faculty members were surveyed to explore their perceptions (behaviors and attitudes) regarding how they perform their jobs, whether they were satisfied with their jobs and whether they had intention of leaving their current job in higher education. Based on the results, it was concluded that higher education faculty with higher levels of job satisfaction tended to have lower levels of turnover intention. Contrary to job satisfaction, higher education faculty job performance had no influence on turnover intention. This research provided statistical evidence and assistance to higher education institutions regarding issues of higher education faculty turnover.
