Online Undergraduate Student Comfort, Community, Facilitation, and Collaboration as Predictors of Student Satisfaction
Lori Sue Maxwell
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
Increased demand in the online environment prompted IHEs to evaluate if student feelings of connectedness can predict student satisfaction. The purpose of this quantitative correlational predictive study was to examine if and to what extent student comfort, community, facilitation, and collaboration predict student satisfaction for undergraduate students who have completed an online business course at a four-year university located in the Southwest United States. The theoretical framework for this study included theories of e-mmediacy, sense of community, and community inquiry. This study was conducted with a convenience sample of 195 participants. The Online Student Connectedness Survey (OSCS) and the Online Student Satisfaction Survey (OSSS) were used as consecutive survey instruments. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that comfort, community, facilitation, and collaboration, considered collectively, significantly predict student satisfaction, F change (4,190) = 31.04, p < 0.001, R[superscript 2] = 0.395, adjusted R[superscript 2] = 0.38. Student comfort, considered individually, was found to be a significant predictor of student satisfaction, B = 0.18, t(190) = 3.98, p < 0.001. Facilitation, considered individually, was also found to be a significant predictor of student satisfaction, B = 0.28, t(190) = 6.71, p < 0.001. Community and collaboration did not significantly predict satisfaction. If confirmed by future research, these results can be used for strategic planning and for designing future IHE courses.
