Campus Based Mentoring and Its Impact as a Dropout Prevention Strategy for At-Risk Students
David Christopher Averett
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Dallas Baptist University
The current mixed method study examined the impact of mentoring on a selected group of at risk students attending a north Texas high school. The study compared the group of mentored students to a group of students selected from the list of at risk students attending the same high school. The study examined the grade point average, attendance, and discipline data of both groups for the 2017-18 school year. Additionally, four assistant principals and the mentor who provided mentoring to the students were interviewed by the researcher regarding their impressions of the mentoring program. The quantitative data was determined to be statistically significant however the results did not support the mentor. The analysis of the qualitative data revealed several themes and codes which were found relevant to the quantitative findings. Both the quantitative and qualitative data were supported by research regarding the effectiveness of mentoring with "ultra at risk" children. Further, the findings of the current study provide educational leaders with direction regarding the significant needs of their most needy at risk students.
