Summer Bridge Program Mathematics Intervention Effects on Student Performance
Jason Scappaticci
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Summer bridge programs are the second most common student support program in the United States. Though they vary in design, most are focused on supporting students who are at risk. Programs vary in terms of their curricular offerings as well. This study examined the ex post facto data from a summer bridge program at Manchester Community College in Manchester, CT. This program went through a major curricular change when it added mathematics in 2012. Though it changed curriculum the program continued to serve a demographically similar population of students each summer. This study discovered the effect of a mathematics intervention on students who are at risk. It concluded that a mathematics intervention has a statistically significant effect on the C or better rates in college level mathematics. The recommendations in this study will help colleges who host or are planning to host a summer bridge program for students who are at risk.
