Cultural and Leadership Challenges Administrators Faced in a Hispanic-Serving University during Regional Accreditation Reaffirmation

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
The problem addressed in this study was that higher education administrators of HSIs face leadership and cultural challenges when preparing for regional accreditation reaffirmation. The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry study was to gather the perceptions of higher education administrators through their experiences and stories in a Hispanic-Serving University undergoing regional accreditation reaffirmation. A qualitative narrative inquiry design allowed the exploration of the institution's culture, the participants' leadership approaches, and the sociocultural narratives through their individual stories and perspectives to better understand the participants' lived experiences. The study's theoretical framework integrated the theory of self-efficacy, sociocultural theory, the Full Range Leadership Model and the Cultural Interaction Model of Leadership and Power. Individual audio and video recorded semi-structured narrative interviews were transcribed for thematic data analysis using the NVivo Pro Transcription Module. The results from the study's three research questions indicated that the participants experienced cultural, leadership, and accreditation challenges during the reaffirmation process. Four strategies emerged from the upper-level administrators' efforts to overcome these challenges, including using communication, emphasis on accreditation as a lived experience, the reliance on teamwork, and focused efforts to train subordinates. The results align with the framework due to the participants' high levels of self-efficacy and the use of culturally relevant training and teamwork initiatives. Future research on the experiences of higher education administrators at a Hispanic-Serving Institution could include using a quantitative or a different qualitative method, a larger sample size, or using more than one researcher for the coding process.
