Best Practices for Active-Duty Dependents Who Relocate during High School: Qualitative Descriptive
Glynis A. Taylor
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how caregivers and teachers describe best practices to support the emotional, behavioral, and academic experiences of the active-duty dependent who relocate to a high school in Northern Virginia from another state or overseas school. Bowen's family system theory was the theoretical framework for this study. This theory was used as a lens to further explore the unique culture of the military family and the challenges the active-duty adolescent dependent face during relocation. A purposeful sampling strategy was used to select 10 caregivers of active-duty dependents and a focus group of four high school teacher participants. Data were gathered through open-ended, semi-structured individual interviews and a focus group via zoom. An inductive thematic analysis was used to analyze all the data collected in the study. The following six major themes emerged from the data relating to the description of how caregivers and teachers describe best practices to support the emotional, behavioral, and academic experiences of active-duty dependent who relocated to a high school in Northern Virginia from another state or overseas school: (1) family and community engagement; (2) positive school climate and culture; (3) consistent implementation of an open-door policy; (4) identifying stakeholder need to remove barriers to student connectedness; (5) organization coherence; and (6) advocating for equity and education opportunities. The results indicated that the best practices outlined above will mitigate stressors on the active-duty dependent who relocated during high school. This study provided strategies to support the groundwork of research from the perspective of caregivers and teachers who support the active-duty adolescent dependent.
