No Words: Long-Term Residential Placement Decision Made by Parents of Non-Verbal Individuals on the Autism Spectrum
Bethany Michele Ogle
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
This basic qualitative research study answered these questions and provides information for assisting stakeholders and future research opportunities related to this population of completely non-verbal individuals on the autism spectrum. The participants in this research study were the parents of the individuals with non-verbal severe autism. I am also a parent of a completely non-verbal individual on the autism spectrum, which made the participants feel more comfortable with sharing their own experiences with their children. There were many significant findings in the research study. Every participant's child with non-verbal severe autism has exhibited self-injurious behaviors in the past or in the present. Children with severe non-verbal autism often have other diagnosis and require one or more medications. Most families keep their non-verbal child with autism at home for long-term care due to many factors but accept that it may have to be an option in the future. To even consider out-of-home residential placement there must be the right supports or parents will not even consider it as an option. Siblings in the home with a non-verbal severely autistic individual causes issues for the family unit as a whole. At-home care is always preferred if the family can have options in, or near their house. Being non-verbal and autistic makes the individual vulnerable to abuse in an out-of-home residential setting. In many states, funding is not available for intensive, long-term care for this population. There are often long waiting lists and lack of available services in many states for long-term residential care. The choice of long-term residential placement is a very emotional decisions for the parents or caregivers of these individuals with non-verbal severe autism.
