An Evaluation of Telehealth Behavior Skills Training in Behavior Analytic Practices for Caregivers of Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are likely to sit on lengthy waitlists for applied behavior analytic (ABA) services, especially when living in rural areas. Early intervention is critical for desired outcomes for young children with ASD. Telehealth caregiver training in ABA skills is one avenue to begin intervention while navigating the wait for brick-and-mortar services. Behavior skills training has been demonstrated as the ideal method for training caregivers. However, there is little research on telehealth caregiver BST in ABA practices and procedures and even less which uses direct observation of parent and child outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of behavior skills caregiver training via a telehealth model on four caregivers' use of behavior analytic practices during interactions with their child with ASD. For all caregiver participants, a functional relation was demonstrated between telehealth BST and caregiver use of targeted practices during play with their young child with ASD. These levels were maintained post-intervention. All three caregivers who completed training demonstrated statistically significant gains in knowledge of ABA. Three of the four young children with ASD increased their verbal behavior over the course of the caregiver training. The study results suggest that telehealth BST can be used to increase parent knowledge and their use of targeted ABA practices in play with their children. Additionally, all parents rated the intervention as acceptable and feasible in social validity assessments. Limitations and implications for future research and practice are discussed.
