A Qualitative Investigation of the Characteristics of Support Services That Student Veterans Find Valuable and Helpful

In the 22nd Century of the United States, student veterans' enrollment numbers have been increasing among higher education institutions. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore student veterans' experiences with the support services they have used and to identify which characteristics of support services student veterans find helpful. Ten student veterans represented two universities and two community colleges in this study. Of the nine male and two female participants, the youngest was 30 years old, and the oldest was 52 years old at the time of the interview. Tinto's theory on student departure and James Coleman's social capital theory guided this research. Data analysis revealed four themes outlining what characteristics of support services student veterans find helpful and valuable. Findings of this research study demonstrate that student veterans appreciate a welcoming atmosphere from staff they interact with more than other commodities such as dedicated space or a lounge. Findings also show that student veterans do not attend the major orientation, often called "Orientation Day," mainly because it is not designed strictly for student veterans only. Due to such results, additional research is recommended to investigate how staff could be further developed to better meet and greet student veterans, and/or what might make these "Orientation Days" more relevant to this population.
