Conducting a Community College Utility Value Intervention in First Year Experience Classes
Kyle C. Mahan
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study was to examine to what extent a difference exists in first year experience (FYE) pass rate and persistence of summer to fall enrollment based on utility value intervention (UVI) participation among college students enrolled in FYE classes at a community college in the Midwest United States. This study was influenced by utility value interventions done at two community colleges that noted improved student success in various ways and was based on the theoretical framework of expectancy value theory. Utility value helps students find value in what they are learning in the classroom and promotes finding application of the material to their personal lives. Archival data was provided by a Midwest community college who conducted a UVI and various FYE sections were either in a control condition or participating in the intervention. This causal comparative study sought out to answer two research questions. The researcher wanted to investigate if there was any difference in FYE course pass rate (RQ1) or difference in persistence of enrollment for fall semester (RQ2) based on UVI participation among college students enrolled in FYE classes at a community college. The null hypothesis was rejected for both RQs. The researcher also conducted hierarchical loglinear analysis to see if there were any significant associations when persistence of enrollment and FYE pass rate were paired with a third categorical variable; gender, age, and URM status. Results showed positive associations between nonURM students and FYE pass rates (X[superscript 2](2) = 9.629, p = 0.002) as well as UVI participation and persistence of enrollment (X[superscript 2](2) = 4.036, p = 0.045).
