A Qualitative Assessment of Perceived Leadership for Higher Education Administrators at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in Metro Jackson, Mississippi to Characterize Organizational Culture
Schenika T. Harrison
ProQuest LLC, D.B.A. Dissertation, University of the Southwest
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the employee's negative perception of their leaders, managers, and administrators, which adversely affects the organizational culture at HBCUs in Metro Jackson, Mississippi. With the current business problem regarding the impact of employees' negative perceptions of their leaders, the study provided pertinent information that can help alleviate future or existing effects of such perceptions. The target population of the study was higher education leaders of HBCUs in Mississippi. HBCUs persisted in American society as far back as the Civil War, and these institutions face the same governance issues, structures, and missions that other colleges and universities struggle with (Nichols, 2003). However, this study emphasized filling the gap in knowledge through qualitative research that HBCUs need to have regarding the impact of their organizational culture on their employee's commitment and capacity. This exploration can give the institution an academic interpretation of their actions, decisions, and communications with their constituents (Tierney, 1988).
