The Assessment of Social-Emotional Growth across Cultures: A Pilot Study for Using the Greenspan Social-Emotional Growth Chart with an Arabic-Speaking Population

When children come to a new country and have difficulty communicating, it may be unclear whether they have developmental problems or are simply struggling with a new language. Early identification and treatment of developmental concerns are crucial to garnering the best results for developing an intervention plan and optimizing child outcomes. There are very few developmental assessments, though, created, normed, or published outside the "WEIRD" (western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic) population, including in the Arabic world. Word-for-word translations are problematic and may be inappropriate due to cultural and linguistic differences. The Greenspan Social-Emotional Growth Chart (GSEGC) is a published assessment that identifies very young children at risk for social-emotional difficulties. It was developed and normed in English in the United States and the publisher has not provided norms for any other populations or languages. The present study involved international, cross-cultural work to create an Arabic translation of the Greenspan Social-Emotional Growth Chart and to determine if its validity as a foundational measure warrants further study to determine norms for screening the social-emotional development of children who are not from the mainstream American culture. A partnership formed between an American researcher and a multi-disciplinary group of clinicians at the Palestinian Child Institute to complete this work. A pilot study using both qualitative and quantitative methods found the new translation to be understandable, accurate, and acceptable to clinicians and families from an Arabic-speaking population.
