Experiences of Accessing and Receiving Mental Health Care within School Based Health Centers in New Mexico for Medically Underserved Youth
Violeta Blanca Jaure
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, New Mexico State University
This study explored the experiences of individuals who utilized School Based Health Center (SBHC) mental health services when they were adolescents. This research specifically looked at how SBHCs serve primarily underserved, impoverished, and rural communities, particularly as they address adolescent mental health care needs in New Mexico. The impact that SBHC's have is specifically examined in relation to students' direct experiences of the mental health care received at these Centers with a specific focus on mental health literacy, stigma, and help-seeking behaviors. This research utilized semi-structured interviews to share their lived experiences of accessing and receiving mental health care within a SBHC when adolescents. The Listening Guide method was used to further explore the narratives and listen for the voices that were both collective and individual. Collective voices and sub-themes that emerged from the interviews included: Voice of Mental Health Judgement: We Don't Talk About It, Voice of Uncertainty: It Takes Nudge, Voice of Safety: The SBHC Felt Safe, Voice of Self-Judgement to Acceptance, and Voice of Agency in Managing One's Mental Health. This research expanded the understanding of ways to address mental health disparities for adolescents through looking at New Mexico specifically, a topic that has not been fully addressed in the literature. Better understanding of these factors will help in meeting the service needs of adolescents who are at risk for mental health problems.
