Salvador Bueno Jr.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
This qualitative narrative inquiry research study was to examine and understand Latino males' experiences, stories, and motivating factors that contributed successfully attaining higher educational leadership (President, Provost, Dean, Professor, Administrator/Director) positions. The 11 participants in the study were derived from a purposeful sampling technique of a population size of 32 Latino males across the United States. The data collection instruments were semi-structure open-ended interview questions. All participants received data instrumentation through emails and individual virtual interviews on Zoom™. The research questions addressed temporality, sociality, and spatiality. RQ 1: What are Latino males' feelings, experiences, and stories to successfully attaining higher education leadership positions? RQ 2: What are the cultural factors and interrelationships with other higher education staff involved in Latino males' successful experiences in higher education leadership positions? RQ 3: How do the physical environment, including self-efficacy, add meaning to the experiences that lead to Latino males' successful attainment of higher education leadership positions? The five themes that emerged from the analysis of data collected from the participants were: Earn the required education for higher educational leadership positions, acquire experience for higher educational leadership positions, identify key mentoring opportunities, see barriers as opportunities, and believe in yourself. Recommendations are to strategically design, develop, and implement pathways to higher educational doctoral degree attainment for Latino males seeking to become higher educational leaders. Areas of future research should focus on the understanding of the challenges and barriers associated with Latino males attaining higher educational leadership positions.
