Different Faces in Black Spaces: Examining the Perceptions of Black Students toward Racial Diversity, Inclusion, and the Future of an Historically Black College or University

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Widener University
Regardless of race, the mission and purpose of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) is to build upon students' skills and abilities and to train students as entrepreneurs and professionals, both locally and globally, in public and private working environments (U.S. Department of Education, n.d.). However, the creation of HBCUs can be attributed to racial discrimination and unjust admission practices that prevented Black students from matriculating into postsecondary predominately White institutions (Snipes & Darnell, 2017). From the implementation of desegregation to a financial need at HBCUs, the non-Black student population has grown from 15% in 1976 to 24% in 2017 (National Center for Education Statistics [NCES], 2022). The literature lacks the perspectives of Black HBCU students about racial diversity and inclusion at HBCUs; therefore, this study examined the perspectives of non-Black students attending HBCUs, and the future direction and purpose of HBCUs. The findings were analyzed using Cross' revised negrescence theory. This study concluded with further research implications, future implications of practice for HBCU stakeholders, and the study's limitations.
