The Effectiveness of Online Learning on the Kinesthetic Teaching Methods of Vocational Educators during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Robert James Grant
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trident University International
This qualitative case study aimed to identify if high school vocational educators were able to teach a vocational trade effectively and progressively through an online learning platform during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Since vocational educators teach most of their lessons through practical hands-on learning with direct supervision in their respective shop classes, educators can argue that transitioning to an online platform would hinder their kinesthetic instruction. Also, to determine if there were any practical options through an online format. If not, did the educators notice a student's skill set in their specific trade subside requiring additional training to get back to a proficient level? Vocational curriculums need students to reach a practical competency before moving on to the practical assessment; identifying effective ways to evaluate practical hands-on learning has steered this study in a direction that has assisted in building an alternative to the online platform. The study has shown that before the pandemic the students were advancing their hands-on practical skill set for their respective trade, but upon returning to in-person classes the majority of the participants stated their student's skill set had regressed. Determining another way to ensure vocational educators can prevent students from falling behind if an event such as a pandemic should happen again is a necessity moving forward.
