Exploring Educators' Experiences and Perspectives with Supporting Refugee Students
Nhi Hang
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
With the number of refugees continuing to grow across the world, teachers must be prepared for meeting the complex needs of refugee students. This qualitative study explores the experiences and perspectives of 17 educators in a school with a high refugee population. Using an action research approach, educators describe the key background information they consider when identifying and supporting the needs of their refugee students. Furthermore, they share the challenges that continuously impact their ability to provide refugee students with the appropriate supports and services for the student to succeed. Findings also draw on current literature that suggests how challenges could be alleviated with more training, community support, and strong relationships.
