¡Hacia Adelante! Building Resiliency in English Learners
Gladys M. Valle
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
Resiliency and self-efficacy are important factors for achieving English proficiency among English Learners. This study sought to identify practices that would create conditions for resiliency. The data collected in Cycle 1 consisted of a teacher survey and student focus group. Action steps were designed, implemented, and evaluated in Cycle 2 to identify social-emotional practices. A group of collaborators developed a toolkit document with resources for educators to use within their schools and classrooms. Further, a teacher focus group provided feedback on the document. The study concluded that three essential conditions for resiliency included shared responsibility, protective factors, and a sense of belonging. Implications for the organization are that student and family perspectives to be considered to best support them.
