This extended literature review explores the history, challenges, and needed supports for immigrant populations pursuing higher education, specifically focusing on first-generation American, second-generation college-bound students (FGASGCBS). Students from immigrant populations face multi-dimensional barriers which can hamper them from accessing supports in their pursuit of post-secondary education. K-12 educators, specifically school counselors, need to be trained on how to effectively assist students from immigrant populations overcome systematic and personal barriers by using evidence-based practices, such as multi-tiered, multi-domain systems of support (MTMDSS). This study provides a training for K-12 school counselors to understand the challenges of FGASGCBS and to learn how to effectively implement evidence-based practices and curriculum provided by the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) when working with higher learning institutions in support of FGASGCBS' pursuit of post-secondary education and success.
