The Academic Art Gallery Experiences of Black HBCU Students
Aja Roache
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Florida State University
Increasingly scholarship reveals art museums, their exhibitions, and collections, are instrumental in shaping visitors' larger social and cultural values (Hooper-Greenhill, 2000; Luke, 2002; Sandell, 2002) and identity (Leong, 2005; Rounds, 2006). My qualitative study aimed to understand Black students' experiences within a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) art gallery. This study serves, in part, to assist my role as a HBCU art gallery director by examining the cultural value of an art gallery through student voices. I hope this study will inform museum professionals and other institutional stakeholders by providing first-hand accounts of HBCU students. The purpose of this study is to explore the art gallery experiences of a sample of Black students attending a southeast region HBCU. The primary research question is what do the participants experience, relating to their racial and cultural identity, while engaging with art exhibitions at this HBCU art gallery? This basic qualitative study utilized multiple data collection methods, such as interviews, meaning mapping, and content analysis.
