A Pilot Study of a School-Based Intervention for Early Childhood Anxiety
Tori S. Virlee
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, University of Colorado at Denver
This pilot study evaluates the feasibility and efficacy of a novel school-based intervention for early childhood anxiety. Despite the established need for anxiety treatment in early childhood, there is limited access to evidence-based treatment. This study utilized one such treatment, parent child-interaction therapy (PCIT) modules developed for children with anxiety: coaching approach behavior and leading by modeling (CALM). In this study, the PCIT-CALM intervention was adapted to utilize teachers, rather than parents, as the primary agent of change. The intervention occurred in the school, rather than a clinical setting. The participants (n=7) ranged in age from three to five and were enrolled in five different classrooms. Caregiver reports suggest that the intervention is feasible, that caregivers learned strategies, were more confident in addressing anxiety, and were satisfied with the intervention. They also reported improvement in the child's anxious behaviors and problems. Caregivers also rated anxiety levels utilizing behavioral checklists, and results are discussed for each participant. Results indicate that the intervention demonstrates promise, and more extensive studies are necessary to establish efficacy. Implications for the intervention are also discussed.
