Understanding Student Engagement and Experiences in a HyFlex Laboratory Course
Lindsey Mayes Mills
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Cincinnati
The Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic posed challenges for laboratory-based courses. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore students' experiences, as related to engagement, in a HyFlex laboratory course that was designed for on-campus and online students to learn together. The research questions were: 1. What are the students' perceptions of their experiences in a HyFlex laboratory course? 2. How do students describe their engagement in those experiences? 3. What are the instructor's perceptions of students' engagement during the laboratory component? In total, 41 out of 43 students in the course participated in the study. Students' written reflections and instructor notes were analyzed using inductive and deductive thematic analysis and a three-phase approach including concept coding, frequency counts, and categories. Results demonstrated all students perceived their laboratory experience to be enjoyable; they liked choosing their participation mode, learning environment, learning, hands-on cooking, and interactions. Most notably, students enjoyed the freedom to choose their participation mode. Despite limited collaboration due to social distancing and/or working individually at home, students still experienced enjoyment through their interactions. The majority of students described they were engaged behaviorally; the instructor perceived the same. These findings are remarkable during a global pandemic because many students across the country did not enjoy the shift to online learning and reported lower levels of engagement. Expressing enjoyment despite limited collaboration may contribute to the body of literature on enjoyment in constructivist learning environments.
