Personal Spirituality and Organizational Citizenship Behaviors in Christian Higher Education
Jason Lawson
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Campbellsville University
Personal Spirituality and Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCBs) are very much a part of people's lives. The construct of OCBs are comprised of non-prescribed employee activities that add value to the organization. The construct was first conceptualized, described, and developed by Dr. Dennis Organ in 1983. Personal Spirituality is a belief in, and interactive relationship with, a higher power or being. For this study, personal spirituality was not tied to any specific religious affiliation or spiritual being. Previous research linking personal spirituality and OCBs has been fairly limited and somewhat contradictory. However, some studies point towards positive relationships between personal spirituality and a higher sense of meaning of work, and also increased employee performance. This past research led to the postulation that perhaps employees of Christian higher education institutions who had higher levels of personal spirituality would have increased levels of OCBs. This research project was conducted with the intent of filling in the gap in knowledge on the topic. The purpose of the study was to determine if a relationship exists between personal spirituality levels and OCB levels among individuals who are currently employed in Christian Higher Education. Findings from the study led to the conclusion there was no such relationship. The findings are discussed, including some potential causes leading to the outcomes in this study, and suggestions for future work in this area are offered.
