Administrator Servant Leadership Influences on Urban High School Teacher Engagement
Monte L. Tapplar Sr.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Indiana Wesleyan University
Research on building principal leadership behaviors has resulted in increased attention regarding leadership theories that principals may consider to maximize school performance. Relevant findings can inform both organizational and educational leadership behaviors. The current study provides new perspectives on leadership implications in urban high schools. Schaufeli and Bakker's 9-point Utrecht Work Engagement Scale measured specific components of work engagement, such as vigor, dedication, and absorption observed among high school classroom educators. Recent studies on servant leadership have provided clearer examples of its influence in education. Urban institutions may benefit from the study due to the unique conditions and learning environments which foster high levels of teacher engagement. The study, measured by van Dierendonck and Nuijten's Servant Leadership Survey, will determine what relationship, if any, exists between administrator servant leadership and secondary classroom teacher engagement in high school urban institutions.
