Investigating Student Perceptions of Influential Factors That Impact the Coach-Athlete Relationship at a Northeast D-III College
Veronica L. Sherman
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, United States Sports Academy
The researcher attempted to explore the relationships between student-athletes and their coaches at a Division-III Community College to determine what factors can impact the coach-athlete relationship. This study holds significance for individuals interested in understanding the dynamics of the coach-athlete relationship and its impact on athlete's psychological well-being. Examining correlations with key psychological factors such as self-efficacy, motivation, and satisfaction provides valuable insights for coaches, sports professionals, and researchers. Participants were 55 student-athletes from a Northeast Community College who completed a battery of surveys related to their relationship with their coach, in addition to motivations, self-efficacy, psychological well-being, and sports satisfaction. Several Pearson bivariate correlations were conducted to investigate the strength and direction (positive or negative) of the relationship between the coach-athlete relationship and self-efficacy, motivations, psychological distress, and sports satisfaction. The findings demonstrated statistically significant positive correlations between the coach-athlete relationship and athlete motivation, satisfaction with sport, and self-efficacy. In contrast, a statistically significant negative correlation was found with athletes' perceived stress levels. These results suggest a meaningful association between coach-athlete relationships and various psychological factors in the athletic context. Practical recommendations for enhancing the coach-athlete welfare at the D-III Community College level may include tailored training programs for coaches, mental health support initiatives, communication skills workshops, and the establishment of continuous feedback mechanisms. By integrating these recommendations, sports organizations and institutions can work towards creating an atmosphere that adopts strong, supportive coach-athlete relationships, ultimately contributing to athletes' overall well-being and success.
