A Dangerous Education: College Gun Violence
Kelley Jean Montz
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D./HE Dissertation, Azusa Pacific University
The goal of this qualitative case study was to determine what institutional processes and practices have been developed in relationship to mass shootings and gun violence, as well as how mass shootings in educational settings impact the way a campus responds and prepares a safety plan. Through speaking with threat assessment team members, student affairs personnel, and counseling center staff, it was determined that institutional processes and practices that have been developed in relationship to mass shootings include the use of a threat assessment team that adheres to best practices, training for campus police, and active shooter trainings for campus departments. Mass shootings have impacted the way this college responds and prepares a safety plan by creating an increased desire and buy-in for change, changes to environmental structures, as well as increasing the demand for active shooter trainings and campus-wide active shooter drills. In addition, previous gun violence has impacted crisis communication. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
