The Effects of Restorative Practices during Incidents of Discipline in Middle Schoolers
Joel Ontiveros
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, National University
Restorative practices are a way of humanizing education. Human existence cannot be silent, nor can it be nourished by false words. It can only move forward with true words, with which men and women can transform the world. The essence of human existence lies in the ability to transform and change the world. Humans are not designed to remain in silence but to express themselves through words by reflecting on their actions (Freire, 1987, p. 88). In this study, the researcher focused on how restorative practices provide a way for schools to strengthen community, build relationships among students and between students and staff, and increase the safety and productivity of the learning environment (Chicago Public Schools Office of Social and Emotional Learning, 2017, p. 3). Students should get the opportunity to learn from their mistakes without fearing isolation due to challenging behavior.
