Black Boy Joy: Understanding Black Male Adolescents' Participation in Computer Science
Jr. Joseph Tele Isaac
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Florida
Initiatives geared toward broadening participation in computing research have addressed the longstanding underrepresentation of various populations - including women, Black people, Latinx people, and persons with disabilities. Although there has been an increase in underrepresented populations participating in computing, building upon these efforts is still necessary. While previous research has investigated broadening participation in computing for women and underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, there is limited research on the participation of Black boys. My dissertation work aimed to investigate pedagogies to increase the interest and persistence of Black male adolescents in computer science in the United States. My research identified factors behind retention rates of Black male adolescents in computer science through existing literature. It also examined strategies for Black male adolescents participating in computer science and conducted case studies centered on understanding strategies and pedagogies for increasing the participation of Black male adolescents in computer science.
