Nurse Educators' Experiences Teaching Pharmacology
Daphne Trenece Barconey
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The University of Alabama
This research study aimed to achieve five objectives. The first objective was to explore the pedagogical content knowledge of nurse educators who teach pharmacology. The second objective was to reflect upon the experiences of nurse educators who teach pharmacology. The third objective was to understand which pedagogical content knowledge informs the pedagogy of nurse educators who teach pharmacology. The fourth objective was to discover what recommendations nurse educators who teach pharmacology make regarding the hiring practices of institutions that employ nurse educators to teach pharmacology. The fifth objective was to analyze the pedagogies that improve nursing students' knowledge, skills, attitudes, and confidence in pharmacology. There were several gaps in the research literature on pharmacology nurse educators. Few studies have examined the experience of nurse educators who teach pharmacology in nursing programs. The first gap in the literature was that minimal research has focused on the viewpoints of pharmacology nurse educators on the pharmacology course taught in the nursing curriculum. The second gap in the literature was that minimal research focused on the lived experiences in teaching pharmacology by nurse educators within the nurse curriculum. The third gap in the literature was that minimal research has focused on nurse educators' experiences concerning pedagogical practice in teaching pharmacology within the nursing curriculum. The fourth gap in the literature was that minimal research has focused on the components of nurse educators' knowledge of pharmacology. The findings of this study were significant to researchers, future nurse educators, and administrators. Researchers will benefit from this study's results by better understanding the experiences of nurse educators who teach pharmacology. Future nurse educators will benefit by receiving knowledge that will enable them to better structure pharmacology courses in academic institutions. Administrators will benefit by gaining better insight into the needs and expectations of students taking pharmacology courses. Additionally, Administrators will benefit by gaining better insight into properly employing nurse educators for teaching positions in pharmacology.
