The Association of Open Educational Resources with Short-Term Student Outcomes
Matthew Simmons
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Florida
Open Educational Resources are free or low-cost, openly licensed course materials used in place of more expensive, commercial ones. Data collected from an open-access institution in Florida was analyzed using multiple regression to determine the relationship of Open Educational Resources with short-term student outcomes. Short-term outcomes of interest included a student withdrawing from a course and, conditional on not withdrawing, a student passing a course. Various subgroup analyses were performed based on course modality (online, face-to-face, or hybrid) and a student's Pell-eligibility status. A variety of fixed effects were also included in various models to analyze the data with respect to student and discipline. Overall, Open Educational Resources were found to not harm the short-term student outcomes of interest while being less expensive for students. The results of this study will hopefully help professors in higher education more easily choose between Open Educational Resources and commercial materials when adopting materials for their courses.
