Gender Representation in EFL Textbook Keynote Using Critical Discourse Analysis
Nisreen Akram Abdallah
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, New Mexico State University
The current study examines gender representations in Dummett et al. (2016) EFL textbook, Keynote, at Middle Eastern University in the Middle East. Keynote is an EFL textbook that is used to teach students in English for Business I and English for Business II courses. The study followed Fairclough's (1989, 1995, 2001, 2015) three-dimensional models which help researchers understand the data by analyzing description, interpretation, and explanation found in the textbook. Description is the analysis of content of text while interpretation helps in showing relation between content and social, political practices and the final model, explanation, leads to critical explanation on macro level by connecting language with power relations and its impact on creating different ideologies. Analyzing content leads researchers to discover overt and covert injustices found in the textbook and its relations to power relations. The results of the study showed that the EFL textbook was biased towards males and marginalized females regarding the social and domestic activities in four chapters of Keynote and they are Working Life, Money, Success, and Well-being. Keynote shows equality between the two genders regarding the pronouns, and shows more pictures related to females than males, however, there were some negative stereotypical images involving females.
