ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Biola University
This study aimed to explore how participation in small-group discipleship fosters a transformative learning experience among undergraduate students in a selected Christian university in Indonesia. Seven semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with 20 undergraduate students and nine very recent graduates from various schools, males and females, ages 18 to 25 years, and actively involved in small-group discipleship activities--BASIC, Brothers and Sisters in Christ--for at least two years. A semi-structured focus group interview was also conducted with six BASIC leaders. The data were analyzed using a grounded theory approach and the latest version of NVivo release 1.5, resulting in six major themes that emerged from the participants and four major themes from the BASIC leaders. This study found that: (1) "God's Word" helped students to grow by changing their perspective, increasing their motivation, and sharpening their self-evaluation; (2) "Biblical teaching" enhanced students' theological perspective and Christian worldview; (3) "spiritual formation" helped students experience more intimate and meaningful relationships with God, understand God's plan and providence better, and practice deeper self-evaluation; (4) "meaningful conversations" facilitated students' critical thinking and open-mindedness, improved their response when facing challenges, and helped develop a true understanding of various aspects of their lives; (5) "peer relationships" changed students' paradigm about the meaning of relationships and helped them to respond appropriately when seeking God's guidance and dealing with others and themselves; (6) "mentorship" assisted students to change their mindset, emotional response, behavior, and spiritual life; (7) "students' self-motivation" encouraged students to change their old mindset and to develop positive behaviors; and (8) "a conducive group atmosphere" strengthened a sense of togetherness and interpersonal relationships among the students, as a family in Christ. Integrating small-group discipleship with academics, creating a student discipleship committee, synergizing with related parties, improving the curriculum and teaching and learning methods, and developing the pastoral skills of small-group discipleship leaders, are things that can be done to develop small-group discipleship more effectively.
