ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northwestern State University of Louisiana
This quasi-experimental pilot study addressed the need for financial literacy services to assist in increasing and providing financial literacy skills development to first-generation, low-income students through a TRIO Student Support Services program. Identification of student needs and support implementation to provide effective services is outlined. The study was available virtually to accommodate safety precautions during the global pandemic, COVID-19. The study was designed to provide enhanced financial literacy support services for first-generation, low- income participants. All activities are relevant for college-going students and provided access to financial literacy resources. The study was conducted over 4 weeks in a two-phase, two-level format. The study participants were given the option to receive an enhanced level of support services during the study. The results identified an increase in financial literacy after participation and the most beneficial aspects of the study design. Successful first-generation, low-income completers indicated a need for greater exposure to improve their financial literacy.
