The Relationship between Middle School Principals' Leadership Style and Their Campus Academic Performance
Christopher D Bayer
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Dallas Baptist University
Public school leadership requires continued research to ensure the best results for future generations. The perceived leadership style of a principal can impact the students, staff, and community. It is important that the perceived leadership style of a principal is compared to the performance of the campus. The more effective the leader, the more opportunities for success the organization can experience. A principal's leadership style can be identified from two viewpoints: the leader's self-perception and the followers observed perception. The performance of the campus can be determined by the rating set by the State of Texas' Accountability System. The current study asked if there was a statistically significant relationship between the self-perceived and perceived leadership styles of a principal, as identified by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire 5X (MLQ 5X), and the performance of the campus. The current study focused on middle schools in a large, urban school district. In the current study 30 principals and 113 Campus Instructional Leadership Team (CILT) members returned the MLQ 5X. The returned questionnaires allowed the researcher to identify 30 principals' self-perceived leadership styles and 24 principals' perceived leadership styles. A chi-square test of independence was used to compare the data. The results of the current study did not indicate a relationship in the leadership styles and campus data, however the researcher identified relationships in the comparison of leadership subgroups identified by the MLQ 5X, the distinctions earned through each campus's state rating, and the years a principal served at the current campus.
