The focus of this pragmatic qualitative research study was to better understand the collaborative experiences and perceptions of secondary transition practitioners as they work on employment preparation for students with disabilities (SWD). Although there is a plethora of research around collaborative secondary transition efforts over the past few decades, qualitative exploration of the experiences of secondary transition practitioners within employment preparation has not been comprehensively explored. Through a pragmatic qualitative paradigm data was collected primarily utilizing an online open-ended questionnaire. Data from 71 participants were reviewed, analyzed, and coded using thematic analysis producing seven themes. Findings indicated that while many practitioners expressed satisfaction with their current state of collaborative partnerships, many realized the importance of purposeful investment, family involvement, and the need for more professional development, resources, and purposeful collaboration for all involved with the partnerships. Participants also shared how the pandemic of 2020 had an impact on their practices and placed an emphasis on the essential components of secondary transition collaborative partnerships in order for improved post-graduation outcomes related to employment preparation and secondary transition for SWD. Discussion of the findings, implications and recommendations for the field, along with suggestions for future research and practice are offered.
