Practitioner Perceptions Regarding Admissions Practices Impact on Ethnic Diversity in Occupational Therapy

Within the profession of occupational therapying the United States, there is a need to increase the amount of underrepresented minority groups to coincide with the growing population of minorities. Black, Hispanics, and Asians respectively represent less than 10% of each ethnic group within the profession of occupational therapy. This explanatory mixed method study sought to understand the lived experiences of occupational therapy practitioners with admissions practices as it relates to decreased diversity within the occupational therapy profession. Data collected from survey responses of 125 occupational therapy practitioners was analyzed utilizing SPSS for means as well as frequency and themes were identified from 16 practitioners who participated in interviews. OT practitioners provided their views regarding the impact of admissions on diversity in addition to recommendations and strategies for OT educational programs to incorporate in the future. These practitioners' perceptions led the researcher to answer the central question of the study: What are the perceptions regarding the qualifications for admissions, perceptions regarding potential limitations for admissions, and perceptions regarding potential challenges to admissions. Several themes emerged from the study; however, the main themes that resonated throughout the study were: barriers, admission criteria, decreased minority presence, access, and representation of minorities to support minority applicants.
