Principals' Use of Internet Monitoring Tools to Address Student Discipline Issues: A Mixed Methods Study
Frank Ciccitto
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, New Jersey City University
The requirement that schools must monitor student internet use is not a new concept to K-12 education; however, the use of safety management platforms (SMPs) to help with this task is new. These tools utilize artificial intelligence to sift through the data attached to student information and communications technology (ICT) use and report it back to school district supervisors. There is limited research on these tools despite their widespread use. This study encompassed a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design to investigate principals' use of SMPs to identify, address, and mitigate ICT discipline issues in their schools. The Concerns Based Adoption Model (CBAM) was utilized to determine if successful implementation was achieved in the sample studied. The results indicate that principals from Grades K-12 utilize the software similarly, although the amount and severity of issues identified appear to increase as the student ages. The results further suggest that the data obtained from these tools can be used with restorative discipline practices to help reinforce digital citizenship skills with students. Future research can expand the sample size, investigate different vendors' tools, and study individual implementations.
